Trust is a critical part of all interactions that we have as humans. It also plays an integral role in communicating in the workplace. Trust among coworkers means: Being able to have a sense of security and confidence when dealing with someone; Having the ability to predict that someone may act in specific ways and be dependable; Earning a level of credibility that has built up over time.
TRUST, according to Dr. Simon, is the mother of all values Without it, nothing can be constructed. True, you can benefit from mutual trust with loved ones, family members and friends. Trust allows you to have well-rounded and mutually beneficial relationships. The same is true in the workplace. A high level of trust creates more positive employee experience and can also lead to a more productive workplace where people feel safe and respected.
The book is an overview of research and practice connected to the diagnosis and building of trust. It includes innovative chapters such as trust in virtual teams, trust at home, the neuroscience of trust and trust in the future. The English version of the book is currently available only in an eBook form, but the French (PUQ) and Spanish (McGraw Hill) books have been already in the market since the middle of 2025. Soon we will be offering workshops and conferences on how to build trust.
Dr. Simon often emphasizes that any concept that cannot be clearly defined and measured is essentially useless. This principle is particularly relevant when it comes to the critical concept of TRUST. While many people frequently use the term “trust,” it often loses significance because individuals define and interpret it in myriad ways. This ambiguity can lead to confusion, especially when it comes to building and nurturing trust in our relationships—be it personal, professional, or within teams. Many find themselves uncertain about how to proceed, feeling lost in the process.
However, this presents an incredible opportunity for us. By taking a step back and striving to define trust clearly, we can create a shared understanding that benefits everyone. Once we define trust, we can set measurable goals and actionable steps to foster it, leading to stronger, more cohesive relationships. Together, we can transform this complex concept into a foundation for success and collaboration. Let’s embark on this journey, fostering clarity and connection as we go!
In 2004, Professor Shay Tzafrir and I embarked on an exciting journey to refine and empirically test a groundbreaking concept known as TRUST-ME. Our efforts culminated in the publication of our findings in the prestigious Ibero-American Academy of Management Journal. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and our work quickly gained recognition for its significant contributions to understanding trust.
Through our research, we were able to define trust in a way that is both measurable and actionable. We identified three essential dimensions: Reliability, Concern, and Harmony. These dimensions offer a comprehensive framework for assessing trust in relationships, making it easier for us to identify areas for growth and improvement.
It is vital to understand that trust is a relative concept; ideally, we seek to engage with individuals who excel in all three dimensions. However, it’s equally important to recognize that low scores in any of these areas are not a dead end. Instead, they present valuable opportunities for training and development. We can foster stronger, more trusting relationships by focusing on these dimensions. Embrace this idea as a pathway to growth and collaboration, both personally and professionally. Let’s take the initiative to enhance our environments and relationships through the lens of trust!
